Madison, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team knocked off in-state and Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom rival FDU-Florham 76-56 on Saturday afternoon.
Tommy Scholl paced Stevens (10-7, 4-2 MAC Freedom) with 22 points as Chris Smith had 13 for FDU-Florham (6-11, 1-5 MAC Freedom).
HOW IT HAPPENED
FDU opened the game on an 11-5 run before the Scholl knocked down consecutive three-pointers to tie the game at 11. The two buckets started a 10-0 rally for the Ducks, giving the team a lead they did not relinquish. It was a three-point barrage for the Ducks in the first seven minutes, as Scholl hit four and
Harmehar Chhabra added one with Stevens taking a 21-13 lead.
FDU closed to within one before
Matt Leming converted from deep off a feed from
Jonathan Nsenkyire. That triple started an 11-0 spurt, with Leming adding another three before
Brendan Coughlan pushed the margin to 12 with 5:58 left in the half. The Stevens defense clamped down, surrendering one basket over the final 3:45 and took a 13-point lead in to the halftime break.
The Devils hit a three coming out of halftime before Coughlan and Chhabra hit layups to bring it back to 14. The lead hovered around 14 before a 7-0 spurt, concluding with a pair of layups from
Evan Gutowski, brought the scoreline to 19 at 55-36. FDU got within 14 with 7:35 to go, but two free throws from
Kyle Maddison halted the momentum.
Scholl hit his sixth triple of the game as the lead swelled to 20, and back-to-back threes from Maddison and
Anthony Loscalzo gave Stevens a game-high 26 point lead. FDU finished the game on a 7-1 run, but were unable to get any closer.
