Waltham, Mass. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team competed in six bouts at the Eric Sollee Invitational, hosted by Brandeis University, on Saturday.
The Ducks were defeated by Boston College (21-6), Brandeis (21-6), MIT (18-9), Brown University (23-4), Wellesley College (16-11), and Tufts University (18-9).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Against Boston College,
Sasha Craine was the lone double winner, going 2-1 at sabre.
Ashlyn Leung (sabre),
Grace Hicks and
Sofia Stoeckel (epee), and
Akemi Rodriguez (foil) each earned a victory. Stevens posted its closest result of the day against Wellesley, with both foil and sabre finishing 4-5. Leung went a perfect 3-0 at sabre, while Craine added a win.
Julia DiPaolo and Rodriguez recorded two victories in epee, and Hicks,
Madyson Gavilanes, and
Elyse Sato each picked up a foil win. Foil and epee both went 3-6 against MIT. Craine led the sabre squad with two wins, while Leung added one.
Emily Zgombic, Rodriguez, and DiPaolo each finished 1-2 at foil, and Hicks and Gavilanes posted matching 1-2 records at epee.
Against host Brandeis, Gavilanes went 2-1 at epee, with Hicks, Leung, Zgombic, and Rodriguez each adding a victory. Craine also earned a winning record against Brown, going 2-1 at sabre, while Zgombic and Rodriguez each went 1-2 at foil. In the final bout against Tufts, epee finished 4-5 as Hicks went 2-1 and
Katherine Mooney and Stoeckel added wins. Sabre earned three victories, led by Craine's 2-1 performance and a win from Leung. Rodriguez closed the day with a 2-1 record in epee.

The Ducks will host their lone home tournament of the season next Sunday, welcoming teams to the Stevens Invitational beginning at 10:00 a.m. inside Canavan Arena and Walker Gym.
