HOBOKEN, N.J. – The No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team broke a nearly 13-year-old program record on Saturday in a 6-0 win over Marywood in MAC Freedom action.
The Ducks took 52 shots -- breaking the previous single-game record of 47 set on October 26, 2013 against Elmira. Stevens improved to 8-4 and 3-0 in conference play with the win.
How it Happened
The offense wasted no time setting the tone.
Just 39 seconds into the contest,
Jess Kopernick found the back of the cage off an assist from
Taylor Brooks, giving Stevens an early advantage, igniting the relentless attack. The Ducks continued to pressure the Marywood defense throughout the first quarter and
doubled the lead when
Jenna Piantieri scored with 1:14 remaining in the period to make it 2-0.
Stevens carried that momentum into the second quarter, with Kopernick striking again just over a minute into the frame, finishing a setup from
Sophia Cozza for her second goal of the day. Later in the quarter, Cozza added a goal of her own (
with a diving effort) off an assist from
Brooke Hughes, stretching the lead to 4-0 by halftime.
While the Ducks did not score in the third quarter, they dominated possession and field position, recording 20 shots and generating eight penalty corners in the period alone.
The offensive barrage resumed in the fourth quarter.
Ava Pelletier scored less than a minute into the period to push the advantage to 5-0. Later,
Julia Katz capped the scoring with a goal off a feed from
Molly DiCampli, as the Ducks added 11 more shots and eight more corners in the period.
