HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team clinched a home match in the MAC Freedom Championship play-in with a 3-0 win over Misericordia on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale.
How It Happened
After several early chances for the Ducks, including an
Emerson Kekesi effort cleared off the line by a Misericordia defender, the Ducks finally broke through in the 39th minute.
Matthew Murillo, who had entered as a substitute less than 15 minutes earlier, found space in the attacking third and converted a setup from Kekesi to give Stevens a 1-0 lead.
Stevens continued to press forward following the opener and doubled its advantage just before halftime.
Luke Carey delivered a long free kick into the box where
Martin Fields battled through contact and beat Misericordia keeper Christian Mazza, sending the Ducks to the locker room up 2-0.
After not being called into action at all in the first half, Stevens keeper
Bobby Boyke made four saves in the second half, simultaneously keeping the Ducks comfortably in front and Misericordia off the board.
The icing on the cake came in the final minute when
Joey Bucchere finished off a brilliant counterattack, beating Mazza off assists from Kekesi and
Luca Chirichiello.
