Hoboken, N.J. – Head Coach
Bobby Hurley of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team recorded his 300th career win as the Ducks sealed the No. 2 seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament with an 87-73 triumph over FDU-Florham.
The Ducks (16-9, 10-4 MAC Freedom) will host No. 3 seed DeSales University on Wednesday in the MAC Freedom Semifinals, while No. 1 Arcadia University will face No. 4 Misericordia University in the other semifinal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Devils took an early 6-2 advantage before the home side rattled off eight straight points, as
Matt Leming and
Kyle Maddison connected on three-pointers. Stevens opened up a double-digit lead 7:45 into the game when Leming drilled his third three of the half to make it 21-11.
Leming continued his torrid first half, pouring in 15 consecutive points for the Ducks, including a 12-0 run by himself. He knocked down four three-pointers and three free throws on five straight possessions before
Peter Gray drilled a triple to extend the lead to 23 at 36-13.
FDU halted the momentum with a trio of free throws, but a Maddison three pushed the margin back over 20 with 4:12 left in the opening half. The Devils trimmed the deficit to 16 late in the period, but two free throws from
Tommy Scholl and a layup with four seconds remaining by Maddison sent Stevens into the break leading 45-25.
Stevens shot 15-of-31 (48.4%) from the floor and connected on nine three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.
The Ducks opened the second half with six straight points, as
Harmehar Chhabra and Scholl bookended the run with layups. A Scholl jumper extended the margin to a game-high 27, but FDU responded with eight straight points to cut the deficit to 56-37.
Leming paused the rally with a three, but Stevens went nearly eight minutes without a field goal. The visitors took advantage, trimming the margin to 10 at 68-58. Scholl answered with five straight points, and Leming followed with another triple to push the lead back to 16 at 78-62 with 4:27 to play.
A layup by Chhabra and a free throw extended the advantage to 18 before the Devils answered with a basket. Stevens closed out the scoring on a layup by
Brian Dolinick off a pass from classmate
Grant Sloan.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Leming finished with a career-high 29 points, including an 8-of-13 effort from three-point range. His eight made triples were two shy of the school record and the most since Stephen Braunstein hit nine against St. Joseph's (L.I.) on November 29, 2023.
Chhabra added 18 points and eight rebounds, going 8-for-9 from the free-throw line. Scholl chipped in 15 points to go along with a team-high five assists and four steals.
Prior to the contest, the Ducks honored Sloan, Dolinick, Leming, and
