No. 3 Women's Basketball Drop MAC Freedom Title Game to No. 1 DeSales, 59-51

Center Valley, Pa. – Fiona O'Boyle finished with a double-double and Olivia Schubiger had 14 points, but the third-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell 59-51 to the top-seeded DeSales Bulldogs in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship Game on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresh off a 29-point performance in the semifinal win on Wednesday over Arcadia, Leyla Castro had seven of the Ducks' first eight, including a steal & layup, then two free throws, giving Stevens its first lead of the day, 8-6. Fiona O'Boyle added the team's final two points of the quarter after collecting a pair of offensive rebounds during an extended possession for a 10-6 lead, though DeSales scored the final six of the period for a 12-10 lead.

After missing both of her shot attempts in the first quarter, Schubiger was a force for the Ducks in the second, hitting 4-of-6, including several strongly contested jumpers. Schubiger had eight of the team's 13 in the period, helping pull the Ducks back within four, 27-23 after falling behind 25-15, but the Bulldogs hit 62 percent of their shots in the frame (8-of-13), carrying a 32-23 lead to the locker room.

Schubiger, O'Boyle, and Dorothy Loffredo all had multiple baskets for Stevens in the third quarter, perhaps the most noteworthy coming at the start of the period when Loffredo beat the shot clock by banking one in from 15+ feet out. Stevens pulled within five on a pair of occasions, but no closer, as the Ducks still trailed 46-39 heading to the fourth.

The five-point margin continued to be the brick wall through which the Ducks could not break, as Stevens closed to that same margin four more times in the fourth, but DeSales withstood every comeback effort, winning their sixth conference title since the 2018-19 season.
