Staten Island, N.Y. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's track & field team sent a contingent of student-athletes to compete at the Fastrack National Invitational on Friday.
Joseph Ruben and
Mick Barbi competed in the 5,000-meter, as the Ducks also sent a team to run in the distance medley relay. There was no team score on the day, with Stevens facing foes from Marist, Siena, TCNJ, Rowan, and Haverford.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Barbi led the Ducks in the 5K, tallying a third-place finish. The senior ran at a third-place pace for the first 1,600 meters before slipping to fifth. After falling another two spots near the midpoint, Barbi gained ground and was back in fifth after 4,000 meters. In the final 200 meters, he made one final move, leaping two spots and clocking in at 15:40.53, clipping fourth by less than a second.
Ruben placed eighth in the same event, finishing with a time of 15:57.9. The sophomore made a climb at the back half of the race, climbing eight spots over the last 2,800-meters. He finished the last 200 meters in 33.94, the fifth-fastest final 200 meters in the entire field.
Stevens closed out the day with a second-place finish in the 4,000-meter distance medley relay. The foursome of
Ryan Paradine,
Christopher Reyes,
Markus Soennichsen, and
Danny Jutras turned in a time 10:20.35. They maintained their second-place time throughout the race, missing a win by less than four seconds.
