Clearwater, Fla. – The No.17 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team opened their two-game Spring Break trip to Florida with a strong performance over two-time reigning Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth finalist Stevenson in a 12-5 win on Tuesday.
How It Happened
The Ducks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as
Maddie Hogan scored off a feed from
Abby O'Brien less than 30 seconds off the opening draw.
Kailyn Vautour and Stevenson's Regan Torbert made three combined saves (two from Vautour, including a free-position shot) over the following 9+ minutes before Hogan made it 2-0 with five minutes left in the quarter.
The Mustangs scored late in the first quarter, but
Alina Friz answered with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart early in the second, putting Stevens (3-3) up 4-1. O'Brien took just 11 seconds to answer a Mustangs goal around the 10:30 mark and
Stefanie Sellitto took less than 90 seconds to answer another around the 3:00 mark as the Ducks carried a 6-3 lead to halftime. Both Sellitto (four) and
Lindsay Esposito (three) finished the half with more draw controls than the Mustangs as a team (two).
After a scoreless three minutes to start the second half,
Elise Hensley scored on a free-position shot, then
Alison Murray scored on a feed from Sellitto 10 seconds later, extending the lead to five in the blink of an eye. Another free-position goal, this time from Sellitto, and Friz's third of the day late in the period pushed the margin out to 10-3 after three.
Sammy Renda – off a feed from Hogan and
Alina Friz – off a feed from Maillie Colin both scored in the fourth quarter as the Ducks put the finishing touches on the win.
