Montclair, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped a doubleheader on the road at Montclair State on Thursday, falling 8-0 in the first game and 4-3 in the second.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
Montclair State put four on the board in the first inning, putting Stevens in an early hole.
After putting the leadoff hitter on second in the first, the Ducks had two on with one out in the second, but again came away empty-handed.
15 of 16 hitters were retired between the top of the third and the top of the fifth before Montclair put four more on the board in the bottom of the fifth, sealing the run-rule win.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
With one out in the Stevens' first,
Allison Mitloff walked, then scored on a
Carmelita Murphy-Brown double. Murphy-Brown came around to score on a
Jessica Hsu single, staking
Kyra Fischer an early 2-0 lead. Montclair loaded the bases with no one out in the first, but Fischer escaped relatively unscathed, conceding a lone run.
In the second,
Lilian Cournoyer reached on a one-out infield single, and was replaced at first by
Emma Quattrochi following a fielder's choice. Next up stepped Mitloff who, like Murphy-Brown in the first, drove in a run with an opposite field double.
The bottom of the second, top of the third, and bottom of the third all ended without any runs crossing the plate despite the teams leaving two runners on in all three instances. Montclair State did break through again in the fourth, knotting the game at three.
After each side went down in order in both halves of the fifth and sixth, in the seventh, Stevens had the leadoff hitter on (a
Madison DiSarno single), and two on with two out (a Murphy-Brown single), but could not push a go-ahead run across. In the bottom of the inning, back-to-back one-out doubles brought in the walkoff run for the Red Devils
