Doylestown, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team split a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom doubleheader with Delaware Valley University on Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks (10-8, 3-1 MAC Freedom) dropped game one, 5-3, before bouncing back for a 5-0 victory in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens struck first in the opener.
Emma Quattrochi reached on an error to lead off the game, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single by
Jessica Hsu. Delaware Valley answered in the bottom of the second, taking a 3-1 lead on three hits.
The Aggies added two more runs in the third on a single through the left side to go up 5-1. Stevens chipped away in the fourth, scoring twice.
Carmelita Murphy-Brown singled to lead off the inning, and the Ducks loaded the bases on an
Isabela Lipsky walk and a
Madison DiSarno single.
Kacey DiPasquale then drew a walk to force in a run before
Riley Lawrence added an RBI on a fielder's choice.
Kyra Fischer settled in from there, retiring the side in the fourth and allowing just one baserunner over the fifth and sixth innings. Stevens threatened in the seventh with walks from Lawrence and Angelique Ceballos-Cardona, but a flyout to left ended the rally.
The Ducks once again scored first in game two. DiSarno drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and came home on an RBI single from Murphy-Brown. Fischer was dominant in the circle, retiring the first 12 batters she faced before Delaware Valley broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the fifth. She responded by retiring the next three batters to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Stevens broke the game open in the sixth with four runs. DiSarno walked to start the inning and Murphy-Brown followed with a single to right. After a flyout and a stolen base by Murphy-Brown put runners on second and third, Lipsky lined a two-run double to left. Lawrence followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and Isabella Won capped the scoring with a two-run single to left-center.
The Aggies put two runners on with one out in the sixth, but Fischer ended the threat with a popout and a strikeout. She then needed just six pitches to retire the side in the seventh and finish off the shutout.
