Bethlehem, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team edged Moravian University 4-3 in a tough Region III battle Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks (6-1) took a 1-0 lead after doubles, winning two of the three flights.
Gigi Arenas and
Stephanie Untermeyer were sharp at No. 2 doubles, earning a 6-1 victory after pulling away with four straight games following a 2-1 edge.
Alix Dry and
Kaylee Hobbick secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3, taking the final two games after the match was tied at four.
Wei-Wei Lai and
Lorena Piegas fell 7-5 at No. 1.
Hobbick turned in a dominant performance at No. 5 singles, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 win. After trailing 2-1 in the opening set, the first-year rattled off five straight games and later jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second.
Julia Chiovitti pushed the Ducks' lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6, winning the final five games of the first set and never trailing in the second. Piegas clinched the match at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph.
Lai was edged 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 at No. 3, while Arenas dropped a 7-5, 7-5 decision at No. 4. Arenas led 5-2 in the second set and appeared set to force a third, but Moravian won the final five games. Dry battled at No. 1 singles, bouncing back from a 6-3 first-set loss with a 6-3 win in the second before falling 6-2 in the deciding set.
