Softball Topped by Lebanon Valley in Doubleheader

Annville, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom doubleheader to Lebanon Valley College on Friday afternoon.

The Ducks (14-12, 3-5 MAC Freedom) fell 8-3 and 2-1 to the Dutchmen (10-12, 4-2 MAC Freedom).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dutchmen struck first, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Ducks answered back in the top of the second, putting up three tallies. Jessica Hsu doubled to right to lead off the frame and moved to third on a wild pitch. After an out, Riley Lawrence dumped a single into right, scoring Hsu. After a sacrifice bunt, Isabella Won dropped a single to left field and took second on the throw, putting runners on second and third with one down. Lilian Cournoyer lined a single off the third baseman's glove to tie the score at two before Emma Quattrochi recorded an RBI knock to center, plating Won.

Lebanon Valley regained the lead with a two-run home run in the third and added two tallies in each of the fourth and fifth innings to grab the 8-3 advantage. The Ducks put one runner on base during the stretch, as Madison DiSarno walked in the fourth, but Stevens was unable to capitalize.

Stevens drew first blood in game two, opening the scoring with an unearned tally. Quattrochi reached on an error to lead off the game and moved up to second on a wild pitch. After a DiSarno groundout, Carmelita Murphy-Brown tallied a run-scoring groundout to give Stevens the 1-0 edge.

The Dutchmen leveled the game with a home run in the bottom of the first and took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single three batters later. Hsu escaped further damage, getting a fly out and pop out to retire the side. The home side kept the Ducks at bay, allowing just one Stevens baserunner over the next three innings, coming on an error.

Kyra Fischer relieved Hsu in the fifth and found herself with the bases loaded and two outs. The senior got a fly ball to center that seemed destined for a hit, but Quattrochi laid out and made a diving catch, closing out the stanza and keeping the margin at 2-1.

Kacey DiPasquale recorded Stevens' first hit of the game with two down in the fifth but was left stranded. Down to their final at-bat, the Ducks nearly rallied in the seventh. Won singled with one out in the seventh and moved up to third on a throwing error and a passed ball. With Angelique Ceballos-Cardona up in a pinch-hitter role, a wild pitch eluded the catcher and Won broke for the plate. She nearly beat the throw but was tagged out, ending the game.
