Weehawken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team swept both ends of a doubleheader against Ramapo College, winning 9-1 in six innings and 7-6 in nine innings on Wednesday afternoon.
Jessica Hsu earned a win in both games and delivered a walk-off double in game two for Stevens (16-12).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Scoreless after one and a half innings, the Ducks broke through with three in the bottom of the second.
Isabela Lipsky was hit by a pitch leading off the frame and moved to third on a single by
Kacey DiPasquale.
DiPasquale broke for second and got caught in a rundown, allowing Lipsky to score from third. An
Isabelle Won single put runners on the corners for
Riley Lawrence, and the sophomore roped a double to left-center, scoring both
DiPasquale and Won.
Ramapo got a run back in the third before Stevens answered with three in the bottom of the fifth.
Allison Mitloff led off with a double to left field and moved up a bag on a bunt by
Carmelita Murphy-Brown. Hsu drove
Mitloff home with a fly ball to right, extending the lead to 4-1. Lipsky was up next and crushed a 3-2 pitch over the left-center field fence, making it 6-1. Won capped the scoring with a single through the left side, scoring
Madison DiSarno.
The visitors nearly broke through in the fifth, as cleanup hitter Alex Hastings sent a long drive that seemed poised to be a home run.
DiSarno went back and reached over the wall, robbing Hastings of a home run. The Roadrunners (24-5) loaded the bases with two down in the sixth, but Hsu got a ground ball to second base to escape unscathed.
Emma Quattrochi got the sixth inning going with a
leadoff walk and swiped second. Mitloff doubled her home before Hsu recorded her second sacrifice fly of the game, stretching the lead to 8-1. Lipsky polished off the win with a mercy-rule, walk-off home run to left-center, sealing the 9-1 triumph.
The Ducks loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning of game two, as Murphy-Brown and Lipsky singled and DiSarno walked. A strikeout closed out the inning, but Stevens put up two runs in the second.
Adrianna Albano doubled to left-center with one down and moved to third on a Lawrence single. Lawrence stole second and the second baseman dropped the throw, allowing Albano to score.
Mitloff came up two batters later and singled up the middle, scoring Lawrence.
Ramapo leveled the game in the third, but further damage was avoided as heads-up defense gunned a runner out after a rundown. The guests grabbed their first lead of the day in the top of the sixth, using a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to score twice and make it 4-2. Hsu trimmed the deficit in half with a line-drive home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth, sending the eighth pitch of the at-bat over the wall. Lawrence singled and
Mitloff drew a walk after a nine-pitch plate appearance, but Stevens was unable to get closer as a strikeout ended the threat.
Down to their final three outs,
DiSarno battled and worked a walk after nine pitches, coming back from a 1-2 count. After a strikeout, Hsu hit a single to right field that went under the right fielder's glove, scoring DiSarno and putting Hsu on third. Stevens couldn't bring the run in, and the game went into extra innings.
Taking advantage of the ghost runner, Ramapo scored twice in the top of the eighth. Further damage was avoided as Stevens turned a double play, with Lawrence snaring a line drive and flipping to Albano. With Albano on second, Lawrence walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. After two strikeouts, Murphy-Brown walked to load the bases. Lipsky was ahead in the count 2-0 before being hit by a pitch, scoring Albano. On a full count,
DiSarno hit a ground ball to short that was bobbled, allowing the tying run to score.
The Ducks held
Ramapo without a run in the ninth, with Lawrence taking the short way to get the lead runner on a ground ball for the second out.
DiPasquale was placed on second in the bottom of the ninth, and after seeing two balls, Hsu lined a double to right, scoring
DiPasquale and sending the Ducks into celebration.
