Late Rally For Baseball Falls Short in Non-Conference Loss to Hartford

Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team outhit the University of Hartford 11-6, but left 10 men on base in a 7-4 defeat at the hands of the Hawks on Monday night at Dobbelaar Field.

How It Happened
Two batters into the game, Hartford went in front 2-0 on a homer to right-center, the only hit of the game through the first two-and-a-half innings.

In the bottom of the third, Vinnie Stigliano led off with a double and went to third on a hard-hit Dylan Fishbough single. Chip Krese followed with a walk to load the bases with one out, but the Ducks couldn't crack the scoreboard.

Hartford tacked on another home run in the fourth and another run in the sixth, taking a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, when the Stevens (15-12) bats came to life.

Pinch-hitter Adam Barrington led off with a walk, advancing to second on a Stigliano single. The second pinch-hitter of the inning, Edward "E.J." Balewitz Jr., singled in Barrington. Next up stepped Fishbough who tripled to left-center, scoring Stigliano, but Balewitz was thrown out at the plate, a play that proved all the more critical mere pitches later when Krese singled in Fishbough with what would have been the tying run. Quinton Sterling kept the threat going with a single, but back-to-back strikeouts kept the Ducks a run back heading to the eighth.

The rally was as close as the Ducks came, as the Hawks answered the three-spot with three of their own in the top of the eighth and, despite bringing the tying run to the plate with one out following a Jackson Wein RBI single in the ninth, Stevens could not pull any closer.
