Dallas, Pa. – The fourth-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology softball team fell to top-seeded Misericordia University, 4-2, on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks opened the scoring in their first at-bat.
Emma Quattrochi led off with an infield single and, after moving up on a bunt, stole third.
Carmelita Murphy-Brown walked and broke for second on the first pitch, getting caught in a rundown long enough for Quattrochi to swipe home for a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars responded in their opening at-bat, taking a 2-1 lead with a run driven in and another scoring on an outfield error. Stevens threatened in the second, as
Isabelle Won led off with a single down the right-field line and advanced to second on obstruction. She moved to third with one out on a sacrifice by
Adrianna Albano but was stranded following a strikeout and groundout.
Misericordia extended its lead in the bottom of the third, plating two runs on a two-out, two-run single.
Kyra Fischer worked out of a jam in the fourth, inducing a lineout with a runner on third to keep the deficit at 4-1. Stevens cut into the deficit in the fifth, scratching across a run. With runners on first and second after a Quattrochi single and a fielder's choice, Murphy-Brown dropped a single into center field, plating Quattrochi. The Ducks were unable to add more, as a fielder's choice and flyout ended the frame.
Won singled with one out in the sixth, but Stevens couldn't move her around as a strikeout and lineout ended the inning. Fischer then set the Cougars down in order in the bottom half, giving Stevens one final opportunity in the seventh. After the first two hitters were retired, Murphy-Brown lined a double to the wall in center, bringing the tying run to the plate. However, Stevens was unable to capitalize, as a groundout ended the contest.
