Middlebury, Vt. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team fell to No. 5 Babson College 4-0 in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament on Saturday morning.
The Ducks closed the season at 17-3, matching the program record for wins in a season while advancing to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year. Babson improved to 17-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Babson claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 1.
Stephanie Untermeyer and
Gigi Arenas fell 6-1 at the second flight before
Lorena Piegas and
Wei-Wei Lai were topped 6-2 at No. 1. At No. 3 doubles,
Kaylee Hobbick and
Alix Dry trailed 5-2 when the match was left unfinished.
The Beavers carried the momentum into singles, earning straight-set wins at No. 5, No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the match. Hobbick was defeated 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, while Piegas fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. Untermeyer was edged by the same score at No. 3 as Babson sealed the victory.
Dry, Lai and Arenas each had their matches go unfinished. Dry was battling at No. 1 singles, trailing 6-2, 5-1, while Lai was in the second set at No. 4 after dropping the opener 6-2. Arenas also remained alive at No. 6, trailing 6-2, 5-2 when play was halted.
