Middletown, Conn. –
Sophia Carr netted her first goal of the season, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team fell to Wesleyan University 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field.
The Ducks dropped to 0-2-2 on the season, while Wesleyan improved to 4-0. Stevens finished with eight shots, including three on goal, and held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Wesleyan recorded 17 shots with 10 on target.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Wesleyan opened the scoring just 4:23 into the contest before doubling its advantage in the 10th minute. Stevens goalkeeper
Lucy Smith kept the deficit at two with a pair of saves less than two minutes apart midway through the opening half. The Ducks responded in the 18th minute.
Hannah Casale set up Carr, who converted at 17:31 for her first goal of the campaign to pull Stevens within 2-1. Wesleyan answered just 33 seconds later, however, to restore its two-goal advantage.
Stevens continued to push forward, earning a corner kick in the 27th minute before
Ashley Knee registered an attempt moments later. Wesleyan extended its lead to 4-1 in the 30th minute and carried the three-goal margin into halftime.
The Ducks generated an early opportunity after the break as
Avalyn Irwin put a shot on target just 1:22 into the second half, but the attempt was saved. Wesleyan pushed its advantage to 5-1 in the 50th minute before
Alana Odom answered with a shot on goal less than three minutes later. Stevens continued to create chances as
Molly McCann recorded an attempt in the 59th minute before Wesleyan added its sixth goal 41 seconds later. The Ducks earned four corner kicks over the final 12 minutes and added attempts from
Stella Genin and
Teagan Shay before the final whistle.
