HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team dropped their first game of the 2026 season Saturday, falling to NYU, 1-0, at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Each side had looks off free kicks within the first 12 minutes.
Martin Fields headed a
Francesco Bonavita free kick on-target in the eighth minute, but the ball found the mitts of NYU keeper Gabino Talisayon. Less than four minutes later, NYU jumped in front with a well-placed header into the right corner past the 6-3 frame of Stevens (4-1-1) keeper
Bobby Boyke.
In the 21
st minute, Boyke slowed a Giulio Potenti shot down just enough for
Luke Carey to clean the loose ball off the end line, keeping the deficit to a single goal. Neither side had a shot on goal the rest of the half.
Boyke was called into action again in the 58
th, first punching out a Violets corner kick, then getting his hand off a volley from just outside the box. The Bonavita-to-Field connection came inches away from equalizing in the 61
st, when Fields again sent a header both on-target and in the direction of a crashing
Omar Martinez, but Potenti got just enough of a hand on the shot to knock it over the end line.
On a day where finding space was a luxury,
Emerson Kekesi created just enough in the 66
th minute and sent a shot from the top of the box just inches wide of the left post, where Fields sent another header in the final 10 minutes, the final shot Stevens took in the match.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Fields had half of Stevens' total shots and both of their attempts on goal
- For the second straight match, Boyke finished with a season-best five saves
- NYU generated 13 corners, nearly half of the corners (28) conceded by the Ducks this season
