Men's Soccer Blanks Skidmore in Home Opener, 2-0

HOBOKEN, N.J. – For the second time in a week, Emerson Kekesi notched a three-point night and for the second time in four days, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team kept the opposition off the scoreboard, taking their home opener Tuesday night over Skidmore, 2-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks wasted little time getting on the board, striking first in the seventh minute when Kekesi found Francesco Bonavita, who beat Skidmore keeper Rowan McLear.

Less than six minutes later, Kekesi corralled a pass from Matthew Murillo, took one dribble to about 20 yards out, and fired one across the box, tucking it inside the right post, doubling the Ducks lead.

Stevens' keeper Bobby Boyke received support from the Ducks' field players on several occasions in the first half, as a pair of Throughbred shots were blocked and three others sailed wide of the mark, while Skidmore's only corner did not yield a shot attempt.

When Boyke was finally pressed into action in the second half, he delivered in spectacular fashion. In the 52nd minute, a nearside cross to about 12 yards out was headed on target, top of the net, but Boyke used his 6-3 frame to tip it over the crossbar. In the 69th minute, Boyke made his other save of the night in a little easier fashion, securing a more high-arcing header from about 15 yards out.

The Duck defense continued to create fits for the Skidmore attack, blocking five more shots in the second 45, closing the books on a second straight shutout.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Bonavita's goal was the first of his collegiate career
  • The Ducks last recorded back-to-back non-conference shutouts against Kean and Rochester at the end of September 2024
  • For the first time since 2013, the Ducks have conceded fewer than two goals in their first three matches
  • In addition to recording the Ducks' two 3+ point performances this season, Kekesi also notched the Ducks' final such outing last season, with a brace against Delaware Valley in the regular season finale
  • Tuesday marked the Ducks' first clash with Skidmore since 2007, which the Ducks won 4-0
