Mark Burger recently completed his second season as an assistant coach with the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team. During his two years with the program, Burger has helped the Ducks to a combined record of 38-19 and two appearances in the ECAC Women’s Basketball Metro Championship.
Prior to joining the staff at Stevens, Burger was an assistant coach with the women’s basketball team at Mercy College – an NCAA Division II school located in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – from 2001-04.
Burger began his coaching career in 1992 when he served as the head coach of an under-21 men’s club team in Aarau, Switzerland. During his five years as head coach of the BC Alte Kantonschule Aarau team, Burger led the squad to an impressive 82-18 record, which was a remarkable turnaround considering that the team had not won more than one game in any season from its inception in 1986 until he took over the program.
In 1999, Burger became the head coach of the boys’ junior varsity team at Chino High School in California. After one season at Chino, Burger returned to Switzerland to become the head coach of the under-17 Northeast all-region men’s team in Zurich. As head coach, Burger led the BZVO under-17 squad to a 12-7 record while competing in tournaments in Switzerland, France, Germany and Italy.
From 2000-01, Burger served as an assistant coach with the Zurich Lions of the Swiss men’s professional league. During his one season with the Zurich team, Burger helped lead the Lions to an 18-11 record and a berth into the second round of the national championship playoffs.
Burger played college basketball from 1997-99 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. As team captain in 1998-99, he led Mt. San Antonio in three-point field-goal percentage. Burger also played in several Swiss leagues from 1992-97.
Burger owns four degrees. He received the Swiss Matura Diploma in Business Administration from Swiss Cantonal College at Aarau in 1995. He also earned an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from Mt. San Antonio in 2000.
In May of 2003, Burger received his Bachelor of Science degree in History from Mercy. He also earned a Master of Arts degree in English Literature from Mercy in 2005.
