HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior Seamus Hunt converted a penalty kick 48 seconds into the second half as USMMA-Kings Point scored three second-half goals en route to a 5-2 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday in a Skyline Conference men’s soccer game at DeBaun Field.
With the win, Kings Point (14-2, 8-0) clinched the Skyline Conference regular season title and earned the top seed in the four-team conference tournament. Stevens (11-3, 3-1) had its seven-game winning streak snapped.
Hunt successfully converted the penalty kick at 45:48, beating Stevens goalkeeper Sean Stevenson to the left side. Kings Point was awarded a penalty kick when Stevens defender Ricardo Diaz was issued a red card for a hand ball in the box. The Mariners played with a man advantage for nearly the entire second half in which they held a 9-3 advantage in shots.
Stevens twice held one-goal leads in the first half, but the leads lasted for a total of 130 seconds. Sophomore Josh Ottinger (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) scored off an assist from senior Giuseppe Incitti (River Edge, NJ/Bergen Catholic) just 6:15 into the game to give the Ducks the lead. Kings Point freshman Nick Dandapani countered just 54 seconds later when he tapped in a free kick off the foot of senior Suni Sukduang at 7:09.
Ottinger then scored on a drive from the top of the penalty area at the 25:58 mark as Stevens regained the lead. But Kings Point again answered as Dandapani headed in a pass from Hunt just 1:16 later to tie the game at 2-2 before halftime.
Freshman Ryan Eaton and senior Will Corrigan also scored in the second half as the Mariners made the most of their extra-man opportunity. For the game, Kings Point held a 13-12 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Stevens held a 9-4 shot advantage in the opening half. Freshman Jarred Schwandt made three saves for Kings Point while Sean Stevenson stopped three shots for Stevens.
Stevens returns to action on Wednesday, October 23, when it travels to Manhattanville College for a 4 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
