KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The United States Merchant Marine Academy scored two goals in each half en route to a 4-1 win over Stevens Institute of Technology in the championship game of the Skyline Conference men’s soccer tournament on Saturday.
Kings Point (17-3) earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. Stevens (14-4-1), the 2001 Skyline champion, lost its second three-goal decision to Kings Point this season. The Mariners earned a 5-2 win over the Ducks on October 19 in Hoboken.
Kings Point scored the first two goals and never relinquished the lead. Sophomore Josh Wooster drew Stevens goalkeeper Sean Stevenson to the right side of the net and then crossed the ball to senior Will Corrigan who scored at the 15:00 mark. Like the first meeting between the two teams, the Mariners scored the eventual game-winning goal on a penalty kick. A Stevens defender was whistled for a trip in the penalty area and Kings Point senior Seamus Hunt converted the penalty shot at 36:35
Stevens responded just 1:40 later when senior Giuseppe Incitti (River Edge, NJ/Bergen Catholic) headed a cross from freshman Drew DePalma (Stockholm, NJ/Pope John) into the ride side of the net at 38:15, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Kings Point put the game out of reach in the 63rd minute when sophomore Everet Lindholm one-timed a shot past Stevenson to the right side of the net. Sophomore Glen Peer scored off an assist from Wooster at 74:17.
The Mariners held a 14-7 advantage in shots. Freshman goalkeeper Jarred Schwandt made two saves for Kings Point while Stevenson stopped three shots for Stevens.
NCAA Tournament pairings will be announced Sunday evening, while ECAC Metro Tournament bids will be determined on Monday afternoon.
