SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Senior Catherine Oldfield (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) went 9-0 in the saber as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s fencing team earned victories over Mary Baldwin (21-6), Virginia (23-4) and host Sweet Briar College (23-4) on Sunday.
Stevens is undefeated in dual meets, improving to 6-0 on the season.
The Ducks had six fencers go unbeaten on the afternoon. In addition to Oldfield, who went 3-0 in all three matches, junior Poonam Patel (Absecon, N.J./Absegami) went 7-0 in the saber. Junior Rensie Punsal (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) led Stevens in the foil with a 7-0 mark. The Ducks also had an outstanding showing in the epee as senior Ilyana Martinez (Union City, N.J./Union Hill), sophomore Andrea Chimel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and junior Lauren Fuchs (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) each went 8-0.
Stevens also had several outstanding performances in a junior varsity tournament on Saturday. Freshmen Judith Generoso (Elmhurst, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) and Tiffanie Vendryes (Rosedale, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) finished first and second respectively in the epee.
In the foil event, freshmen Helen DeJesus (Astoria, N.Y./Long Island City), Cynthia Miralles (Elizabeth, N.J./Roselle Catholic) and Esther West (Jersey City, N.J./St. Dominic Academy) placed second, third and fourth respectively in the foil. In the saber, freshmen Marina Fingerman, Caroline Irungu (Edison, N.J./Edison) and Siobhan Forino (Hoboken, N.J./St. Mary’s) finished third, fifth and sixth respectively.
The Stevens women’s fencing team returns to action on Saturday, February 1, when it hosts Brandeis, Fairleigh Dickinson, Haverford, Johns Hopkins and Temple in dual meet action.
