HOBOKEN, N.J. – Pinch runner Brett Adamsky scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by center fielder Anthony Scali in the top of the tenth inning to lift Farmingdale State to a 10-8 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Thursday night in a non-conference game at the Dobbelaar Baseball Field.
Farmingdale (4-7) designated hitter Robert Sorbera drew a leadoff walk to open the tenth inning. He stole second and moved to third on a bunt single by second baseman Jason Parga. Scali then executed the squeeze bunt, driving in Adamsky with the go-ahead run. Parga later scored on a wild pitch to put the Rams ahead 10-8.
Trailing 8-7, Stevens (7-15) forced extra innings by scoring a single run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Sophomore left fielder Michael Carrano (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) double to right field with one out and then stole third. Junior third baseman Gerard Strein (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) then drew a walk, putting runners on the corners. An errant pickoff attempt by Farmingdale reliever Joe Bono enabled Strein to move to second and Carrano to score the tying run.
Stevens battled back from deficits to tie on four occasions. The Ducks trailed 6-5 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior designated hitter James Bailey (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) opened the inning with a double down the left-field line and was replaced by pinch runner Jeff Drobik. Sophomore right fielder Kevin Suders (Mapleton Depot, Pa./Mt. Union Area) singled to left field, driving in Drobik to tie the game at 6-6. Suders moved to third on a single by senior shortstop C.J. Ecke (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) and then scored on a straight steal of home to give Stevens a 7-6 lead.
Farmingdale reclaimed the lead, 8-7, in the top of the eighth on a two-out two-run home run to right by left fielder John Hughes. Hughes went 2-for-5 and drove in five runs to lead the Rams. Phil Corso and Rob Meadows also had two hits each.
Stevens, which had 11 hits, was led by freshman center fielder Tim Meehan who went 3-for-6. Ecke added two hits in four at-bats.
Stevens returns to action on Friday, April 18, with a 4 p.m. Knickerbocker Conference game at Lehman College.
