Su, Stelmakh Earn Singles Victories but Men's Tennis Falls to FDU-Florham, 5-2

MADISON, N.J. – Freshmen Steve Su (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) and Yuriy Stelmakh (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) earned singles victories, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to FDU-Florham on Monday.

FDU-Florham (7-5) captured four of six singles matches and earned the doubles point by taking all three doubles matches. Brian Gonsar, Rich Tsapp and Bhavyank Rajani earned straight sets victories in singles play to lead the Devils.

Su earned a victory at first singles by outlasting Frank Geiger in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Stelmakh recorded the other victory for Stevens (5-4) with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Arkady Smolyansky at fifth singles. At fourth singles, Stevens junior Ariel Kemelman (Milltown, N.J./Spotswood) was beaten in a third-set tiebreaker by Matt Aptekar, 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.

Su suffered his first loss in doubles play. Su, who falls to 6-1 at first doubles, and senior Javier Artola (Puebla, Mexico/Instituto Oriente) were beaten by the tandem of Geiger and Gonsar, 8-5.

The Stevens men’s tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, April 23, when it hosts Rutgers-Newark in a 4 p.m. non-conference match.
