HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior second baseman C.J. Ecke (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 17-7 win over Centenary on Wednesday night in a non-conference game at the Dobbelaar Baseball Field.
Stevens (9-18) erased a 6-0 defict with a 10-run third inning. The Ducks sent 15 batters to the plate with all nine players scoring in the inning. Stevens also took advantage of six walks and three Centenary errors. Junior center fielder Ben Shaw (Wayne, Pa./Upper Merion) had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs in the inning. Ecke, who led off with a walk, drove in freshman pitcher Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) with a bases-loaded bunt single to tie the game at 6-6. Sophomore shortstop Jeff Drobik (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley) then drew a walk, forcing in senior first baseman James Bailey (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) with the go-ahead run.
Stevens sent nine men to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five more runs to increase their lead to 15-6. The first five batters had hits. Junior left fielder Adam Yoda (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) drove in the first run with a single and Ecke followed with a two-run double down the left-field line.
The Ducks added two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a throwing error to open up a 17-6 lead.
Centenary (8-11-1) ended a string of 17 straight Stevens runs in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore right fielder Nigel Archibald tripled to left-center field and came around on an error.
The Cyclones got off to a fast start, scoring five runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. Junior center fielder Jack Suroweic and freshman first baseman Brandon Klein both had RBI doubles. Suroweic also had a two-out double in the top of the second and scored on a single by Archibald to give Centenary a 6-0 lead.
In his first career start, Meehan (2-1) settled down after giving up six runs on seven hits in the first two innings. He held Centenary scoreless for the next four innings as Stevens took control. Meehan finished with six strikeouts and just two walks while working into the seventh inning. Junior Greg Malloy (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up two hits and no runs while striking out five.
Shaw, Meehan, Bailey and Drobik all had two hits each for Stevens. Suroweic led Centenary with three hits.
The Ducks return to action on Saturday, April 26, when they host New York Maritime in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
