HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior forward Jenna Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y./St. John Villa) scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team to a 75-38 win over California Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon in the first game of the inaugural Stevens Tip-Off Tournament at the Canavan Arena.
Stevens advances to the championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m. where it will play Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, an 88-13 winner over John Jay in the second game. Caltech will face John Jay in the consolation game beginning at 1 p.m.
The Ducks took advantage of a 9-0 run in the first four minutes of the first half to jump out to a commanding 43-12 halftime lead. Freshman forward Dora Enright (Longmont, Colo./Longmont), who had a game-high six steals, scored all 12 of her points in the first half.
In the second half, Stevens led by as many as 46 points, 66-20, en route to the 75-38 victory.
Ten of the 11 Stevens players that saw action scored in the game. Freshman guard Jean Matusiak (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King), freshman forward Rebecca Baldyga (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and junior guard Rachel Ostroff (N. Miami Fla./Miami Country Day) had eight points apiece.
Ostroff and sophomore Cathleen Titus (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Holy Angels) led the Ducks with eight rebounds apiece.
Jessica Roberts led the Beavers with 15 points in the game.
