Five-run fifth inning lifts Salisbury to 14-5 win over Stevens in baseball

SALISBURY, Md. – Senior designated hitter Rob Kassekert went 2-for-3 with two doubles, four runs batted in and two runs scored to lead Salisbury University to a 14-5 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday at Sea Gull Field.

Salisbury, which has won eight of its last night games, improves to 11-3.  Stevens falls to 4-4.

Salisbury scored single runs in the second and third innings.  The Sea Gulls broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the sixth.  Right fielder Jason Lively had a two-run single and third baseman David Sutton added a two-run double in Salisbury’s five-run fifth inning.  Kassekert had a two-run double in the sixth.

Junior Brian Shipe (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with seven shutout innings on the mound for Salisbury.  He struck out eight while allowing just five hits.

Stevens’ bats came alive in the ninth inning as the Ducks scored five runs on six hits.  Sophomore center fielder Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne), who went 3-for-5, had an RBI single.  Freshman third baseman Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J./Absegami) contributed a two-run double.

Freshman right-hander Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) took the loss for Stevens, falling to 2-1.  Sandt, who finished with four strikeouts, gave up just two runs on three hits through four innings before Salisbury broke the game open in the fifth.

Stevens returns to action on Monday, March 15, when it travels to Washington, D.C., for a 3 p.m. game against Catholic University.
