HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Stevens men’s tennis team dropped two matches on Monday, falling to Wheaton (Mass.) and St. Lawrence but scores of 7-0 and 6-1. The Stevens women’s tennis team also opened play in Hilton Head with a 9-0 loss to Wheaton.
On the men’s side, Stevens (1-3) was unable to capture a set against Wheaton as it fell 7-0. Sophomore Steve Su (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), the Ducks’ top singles player, dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Payum Payman.
In a 6-1 loss to St. Lawrence, sophomore Yuriy Stelmakh (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) recorded the lone Stevens victory - a 6-4, 6-3 win over Neil Cutler at fifth singles. Su dropped a heartbreaker to Matt Dwyer at first singles. After winning the opening set 7-6 (5), Su lost the second set 6-0 and fell behind 7-3 in the third-set tiebreaker. He rallied to take a 9-8 lead, but Dwyer won the next three points to capture a close match.
In the women’s match against Wheaton, junior Kari Munger (Morristown, N.J./Newark Academy) suffered her first loss in two years of dual-match singles play at Stevens. Munger, who was 30-0 in dual matches dating back to the fall of 2002, dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Ashley Kriwinsky at first singles. The closest match saw Wheaton’s Carissa Stevens rally for a 4-6, 6-1, (10-8) victory over junior Suzanne Woodrow (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck).
“It’s been a rough day for both teams,” said head coach Jeff Bloomberg. “We came down to Hilton Head to get match-tough and that’s what’s happening. It should bode well for us when we return home to begin the regular spring schedule.”
The women’s tennis team returns to action on Tuesday, March 16, with a noon match against William Smith in Hilton Head. The Stevens men will face Westminster (Pa.) on Wednesday, March 17, at noon.
