HOBOKEN, N.J. – Sophomore center fielder Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 4-2 win over Centenary College on Wednesday at the Dobbelaar Baseball Field. The game was the Skyline Conference opener for both teams.
Stevens (7-6) scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and never trailed. Junior pitcher Kevin Suders (Mapleton Depot, Pa./Mount Union Area) was hit by a pitch to open the inning. After stealing second, Suders moved to third on an infield single by sophomore third baseman Gerard Moreno (Bogota, N.J./Bogota). Junior second baseman Jeff Drobik (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley) grounded to shortstop and Suders beat the throw home to give the Ducks the initial lead. Meehan later singled to center with runners on second and third to increase the lead to 3-0.
After giving up a single in the first inning, Suders (2-1) did not allow another hit until catcher Matt Hoffman singled with one out in the seventh. The Stevens right-hander allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out four in 7.1 innings. Suders departed after giving up a two-run home run to Centenary junior right fielder Nigel Archibald with one out in the eighth. Freshman right-hander Jim Waterman (South Harrison, N.J./Paul VI) pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit for his first career save.
Leading 3-2, Stevens added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Meehan drove in Moreno with a two-out single to right.
Centenary (9-3) received eight solid innings from junior right-hander James Suroweic who gave up just four hits while striking out six.
Stevens returns to action on Saturday, March 27, when it hosts Richard Stockton College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
