HOBOKEN, N.J. – Freshman forward Julie Beck had a goal and an assist to lead Richard Stockton College to a 3-0 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday in a field hockey game at DeBaun Field.
With the win, Stockton evens its record at 4-4. Stevens, in its first year of varsity competition, falls to 0-5. The game was the first-ever varsity home game for Stevens.
Stockton took control early in the first half. Beck fed a pass to sophomore Becky Fantry who scored after a penalty corner just 2:01 into the game to give the Ospreys the lead.
Beck slapped in a loose ball following another penalty corner 7:04 into the game to increase Stockton’s lead to 2-0 at halftime.
The Ospreys added a goal in the second half when sophomore Alison Capelli redirected a shot by Kristen Woodrow past Stevens goalkeeper Katherine Freed at the 54:15 mark.
Stevens had its best scoring opportunity in the first half on back-to-back penalty corners. A high shot by junior Nilka Leon (Union City, N.J./Dwight Englewood) was turned away by Stockton goalkeeper Caitlin Nolan.
Stockton held a 14-3 advantage in shots. Nolan and freshman Trish McLaughlin had one save each for the Ospreys. Freed stopped three shots for Stevens.
Stevens returns to action on Wednesday, September 29, when it travels to DeSales University for a 4 p.m. game.
