CORTLAND, N.Y. - Sophomore midfielder Chris McGreevy (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) scored in the 11th minute and senior forward Josh Ottinger (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) added a goal in the 67th minute as the 12th ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 win over Cortland State on Friday night.
Stevens, ranked 12th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III poll, dominated the match statistically with a 19-9 advantage in shots, including 11-2 in the first half. Cortland, which dropped a 1-0 double-overtime decision to Ithaca in its opener on Wednesday, falls to 0-2.
McGreevy put the Ducks ahead at the 10:44 mark, scoring on a drive inside the left post from the left side of the penalty area off an assist from junior midfielder Chris Barsky (Holland, Pa./Council Rock).
Ottinger, who scored a team-leading 21 goals last season, picked up where he left off when he one-timed a shot from 10 yards to the upper right side of the cage off an assist from junior Drew DePalma (Stockholm, N.J./Pope John XXIII) at the 66:18 mark.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Celentano (Newton, N.J./Newton) needed to make just two saves to earn the shutout. Sean Trask made six saves for Cortland State.
Stevens is back in action on Sunday, September 5, when it travels to Ithaca, N.Y., for a 1 p.m. game against Ithaca College.
