Freshman Mike Detsis improved to 6-0 with two wins against Southern Maine and Messiah.

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Freshmen Michael Detsis (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) went undefeated with two pins at 141 pounds, but the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team dropped to Messiah 38-9 and Southern Maine 30-20 Saturday afternoon in Walker Gym.   With the victories, Detsis improves to 6-0 in dual matches this season.

With the loss, Stevens falls to 3-3, while Southern Maine improves to 6-2 and Messiah moves to 4-3.

The Ducks jumped out to a 20-12 lead against Southern Maine after winning bouts at 133, 141, 157 and 165 pounds.  Junior Pat Falvey (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) put Stevens on the board, winning by forfeit at 133.  At 141, Detsis secured his first victory of the day with a pin over Don Flowers.  Freshman Brandon MacWhinnie (Barton, N.Y./Tioga Central) defeated Vince Chiorgno by pin at 157 to give the Ducks a 17-12 advantage over the Huskies.  Freshman Ryan Bennick (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe Senior) increased Stevens lead with a 9-3 decision over Nate Ribblet at 165.  However, the Ducks dropped their next four matches and were unable to hold onto the win.

After losing their first two matches against Messiah, Detsis defeated Matt Gorkos by pin.  MacWhinnie earned his second win of the day by forfeit, but Stevens still trailed 15-9.  Messiah regained control and won the next five matches to secure the victory.

The Ducks return to action on Tuesday, January 11 when they travel to Hunter for a 6 p.m. start.
