Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Nico Diaz and
Ryan Smith each finished fourth in their respective weight classes for the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team on the final day of competition at the 2026 Division III Wrestling Championships Saturday.
As of the start of championship matches Saturday night, Stevens was in 16
th place with 29 points. Wartburg was 35.5 points clear of the field for the team title, seeking its third championship in five years.
Diaz, the 141-pound No. 2 seed started his Saturday with a semifinal bout against third-seeded Kade Blume from Wartburg. With Diaz in top position, Blume secured the lone point of an eventual 1-0 decision with an escape from the bottom, sending Diaz to the third-place match against the class' No. 6 seed, Pierre Baldwin of Central (Iowa). Down 3-2 entering the third period, Diaz took the lead with a takedown 30 seconds into the period, but Baldwin escaped, then secured what would be a match-deciding takedown in the final minute, as Diaz fell 8-6.
In a No. 6 vs. No. 7 semifinal at 157, Smith (the No. 7 seed), conceded takedowns in the first and third periods, dropping a 9-2 decision to Rhenzo Augusto of Elmhurst. In the third-place bout with No. 3 Charlie Dojan of Wartburg, Smith again conceded takedowns in the first and third periods in an 11-4 decision loss.
Four times an All-American following his 2-0 effort on Friday, Smith's performance produced his best result at NCAA's as a Duck after finishing eighth in 2022-23, sixth in 2023-24, and seventh last season.
Diaz's first All-American season capped a remarkable campaign after missing all of 2024-25 with an injury.
