HOBOKEN, NJ – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team split its two matches Saturday at the Sea Gull Classic in Salisbury, MD, to finish in third place in the five-team tournament. The Ducks dropped a 3-0 decision to host Salisbury in their first match of the afternoon and defeated Williams in a thrilling five-game match in their final match of the weekend tournament to improve to 13-4 overall.
Salisbury finished first in the tournament with a 4-0 record, while Lebanon Valley was second, finishing 3-1. Stevens was third with a 2-2 mark and Williams was fourth, finishing 1-3. Villa Julie rounded out the field, finishing 0-4 on the weekend.
Stevens lost three close games to Salisbury, 30-25, 30-25 and 30-27. The Ducks rebounded against Williams College, winning in five games. Steven and Williams split each of the first four games, with Stevens taking the first and third game, 30-27 and 30-20. Williams won the second and fourth game, 30-24, and 30-27, to force the decisive fifth game. The Ducks erased a 10-5 deficit in the decisive 15-point final game to take the fifth game and earn the match victory, 15-12.
Sophomore Dawn Herring (Prince Frederick, MD) represented Stevens on the All-Tournament team after completing the weekend with 22 kills and 15 digs against in the victory over Williams and 11 kills and eight digs against Salisbury. She had eight kills, 14 digs and five aces in the win over Villa Julie and 18 kills and 13 digs against Lebanon Valley on Friday. She completed the four-match tournament with 59 kills and 50 digs.
Freshman Melanie Volk (Thompson Station, YN) posted 12 kills and 15 digs against Salisbury. Junior Rachel Ostroff (N. Miami, FL) added 19 digs to become just the third player in Stevens history to record 1,000 digs in her career, joining Joy Chiu (1,120 digs, 1999-2002) and Margeritte Abdelokodoos (1,252 digs, 2001-2004) with the destinguised honor. Ostroff finished the weekend with 1,047 career digs. Senior setter Gina Joyce (Fort Myers, FL), who recently recovered from injury, registered 22 assists for the Ducks. Freshman Summer Hamilton (San Diego, CA) posted seven kills and four blocks.
Volk led Stevens against Williams with 15 kills and 15 digs. Freshman Jess Gardner (Penfield, NY) and Joyce combined for seven blocks with Gardner posting four blocks and Joyce adding three. Gardner also contributed 10 kills and Joyce added 13 digs and 55 assists. Ostroff finished the second match with 26 digs, while Hamilton had seven kills and five digs for the Ducks.
Stevens will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 5, when the Ducks host Vassar College at 7 p.m. at Canavan Arena.
