KINGS POINT, NY – In a battle of Skyline Conference unbeatens, The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team posted a 4-2 victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Saturday afternoon at Captain Tomb Field in Kings Point, NY. The Ducks improve to 7-3-2 overall and 4-0 in Skyline Conference play, handing Kings Point (11-3-1, 7-1 Skyline) its first loss in conference action.
The game marked the 22nd-straight victory for the Ducks in Skyline Conference matches and Stevens’ fifth-straight win overall.
Stevens struck first in the fourth minute as junior Nick Gkionis (Jackson, NJ) rocketed a shot from the left side for an unassisted goal.
Kings Point responded with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 advantage. Patrick Boyle’s shot was deflected and David Poulnot of the Mariners corralled the loose ball, punching in the goal from the left side of the box in the sixth minute. Kings Point then took the lead in the 25th minute on Brad Silveira’s goal from the left side off assists from Chris Flanagan and Kyle Flynn.
Stevens tied it back up in the 29th minute on Steve Liebezeit’s (Pompton Lakes, NJ) goal from George Gkionis (Jackson, NJ).
Junior Chris McGreevy (Rochester Hills, MI) scored the Ducks’ final two goals to seal the victory. The Ducks regained the lead in the 43rd minute on McGreevy's first goal from the left corner. His final tally came just before time expired in the match. The junior forward now has nine goals and two assists in his past three matches.
Stevens outshot Kings Point, 20-6, in the match, including 12-2 in the first half. The Ducks held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Chris Celentano (Newton, NJ) recorded two saves in goal for the Ducks. Kings Point goalkeeper Joseph Halverson had nine saves for the Mariners.
Saturday marked the Ducks’ first match since Oct. 5, when Stevens posted a 5-0 victory over Kean at home. The Ducks were scheduled to play at Roanoke last Sunday, but the game was cancelled due to the heavy rain that battered the East Coast.
Stevens will return to action on Monday against Mount Saint Vincent at DeBaun Field in Hoboken, NJ, at 7 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Mount Saint Vincent, but weather forced the venue to be moved to Stevens.
