Men's Tennis defeats Westminster, but falls to Luther

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Junior Steve Su (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) earned two victories at first singles as the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team shut out Westminster, 7-0.  The Ducks dropped an evening match to nationally ranked Luther 6-1.

Su recorded Stevens' (1-3) first victory at first singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Dave Molitor.  He also teamed with senior Dave Asis (Jersey City, N.J./McNair) to earn an 8-3 win at second doubles.  Asis also earned a victory in fifth singles, defeating Ryan Mistovich 6-2, 6-0.  Freshman Ricky Bawa (North Bergen, N.J./Dwight-Englewood) earned a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Ben Libert at second singles and captured an 8-4 win at first doubles with freshman Arjun Mehta (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian).  Sophomore Diego Quintana (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) earned a win for the Ducks at third singles, defeating Bryan Gesinski 1-6, 6-4 and 10-7 in a super tiebreaker.  At fourth singles, Yuriy Stelmakh (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) captured a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Eugene Cunningham.  Boris Kocherov (Edison, N.J./Edison) earned the Ducks a win at sixth singles 6-1, 6-0.  Sophomore Ian Mullican (Gillette, N.J./Oratory Prep) defeated Jason Lundmark in an exhibition match 8-1.

Stevens also received an 8-1 victory at third doubles with seniors Ryan Telford (Paterson, N.J./Kennedy) and Ben Shaw (Wayne, Pa./Upper Merion Area) defeating Molitor and Dusty Rhodes.

Against Luther, Stevens was successful at first singles with Bawa and Su earning a 8-3 win over Brad Nelson and Jono Martin.  Su also had a 6-1, 5-7 (10-8) super tiebreaker victory at first singles. 

Stevens is next in action in Hilton Head on Tuesday, March 22, with an 11 a.m. match against Emory and Henry.
