HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior center fielder Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) and freshman designated hitter John Frustaci (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Paramus Catholic) had RBI singles as Stevens Institute of Technology broke a tie game in the bottom of the fourth inning and earned a 5-3 win over Manhattanville College on Wednesday afternoon in a Skyline Conference game at the Dobbelaar Baseball Field.
Stevens earned its fourth straight win and its seventh win in the last eight games to improve to 15-8 overall and 7-2 in Skyline Conference play. Manhattanville falls to 7-5 overall and 6-3 in the league.
With the score knotted at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Meehan ripped a two-out single up the middle that scored senior second baseman Jeff Drobik (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley) from third. Following an infield hit by sophomore shortstop Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa./William Allen), Frustaci singled to center field, driving in Meehan for a 5-3 Stevens lead.
Freshman right-hander Scott Picerno (Bayonne, N.J./Hudson Catholic) worked into the eighth inning to pick up his third win in eight days. Picerno struck out five and did not walk a batter in improving his record to 6-2. Sandt came in with two out in the eighth and recorded the final four outs for his league-leading fifth save.
Stevens took an early 3-0 lead with one run in the bottom of the first and two in the second. Freshman catcher David Katusa (Franklin Township, N.J./Franklin Township), who singled in the first, scored the first run on a fielder’s choice. Meehan had a sacrifice fly and Sandt had a run-scoring single in the second as Stevens extended its lead.
Manhattanville pulled even in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore pitcher Mark Barrar (Newtown Square, Pa.) led off with a home run to right field. After junior first baseman Ted Rydesky (Newtown Square, Pa.) singled, senior third baseman Rich Battista (Mahopac, N.Y.) followed with another home run to right to tie the game at 3-3.
Stevens answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs on five hits off Barrar (1-1).
The top four batters in the Stevens order – junior Gerard Moreno (Bogota, N.J./Bogota), Katusa, Meehan and Sandt – had two hits apiece.
Rydesky, senior Dan Manfrates (Syracuse, N.Y.) and senior Michael Sabatello (Bronx, N.Y.) had two hits each for Manhattanville.
Stevens and Manhattanville meet again on Saturday, April 16, in Purchase, N.Y., in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
