NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore shortstop Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) went 4-for-6 and freshman right-hander Scott Picerno (Bayonne, N.J./Hudson Catholic) earned his league-leading seventh win as the Stevens baseball team cruised to a 12-4 win over Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday night in a Skyline Conference game at Delano-Hitch Stadium.
Stevens (18-10, 10-4 Skyline) pounded out 18 hits and scored in all but two innings. All nine Stevens starters had at least one hit. Mount Saint Mary falls to 8-15 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
The Ducks scored two runs in the top of the third inning to break a 2-2 tie. Junior center fielder Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) drew a leadoff walk and Sandt followed with a single. Freshman designated hitter John Frustaci (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and sophomore third baseman Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J./Absegami) had back-to-back RBI singles as Stevens took a 4-2 lead.
Sandt and Frustaci (3-for-6, 3 RBI) had RBI singles in the three-run fourth inning as the Ducks extended their lead to 7-2.
Picerno (7-2), who pitched his second complete game of the season, had a season-high eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter. He earned his seventh win, tying the Stevens single-season record held by Eugene Tkac (1952) and Mike Belz (1990).
Stevens and Mount Saint Mary meet again on Friday in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J.
