HOBOKEN, NJ – Manhattanville scored once in the first half and three times in the second half to hand the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team its first loss of the season Wednesday evening at DeBaun Field in Hoboken, NJ. The Ducks fall to 4-1 on the season, while the Valiants even their record at 3-3.

The game began under cloudy skies and play was eventually suspended for a half-hour lightning delay in the first half. Teams returned to the field after officials deemed it safe and play resumed with about 15 minutes remaining in the opening half.

Manhattanville opened a 1-0 lead on the Ducks in the 29th minute after Danielle Lacroix’s shot bounced off Stevens goalie Stephanie Smith (Hockessin, DE) and Abbe Grimes collected the loose ball and scored from close range.

Grimes put the Valiants up 2-0 in the 49th minute, taking a feed from Ali Van Horn for her second goal of the game. The pair hooked up again two minutes later with Van Horn scoring from 10 yards out to give Manhattanville 3-0 advantage.

The Valiants tacked on a fourth goal with four seconds remaining in the contest as Lacroix found Alissa Tyghter for the score to give Manhattanville the 4-0 victory.

Manhattanville outshot Stevens, 24-6, holding a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners. Smith recorded eight saves for the Ducks, while Lauren Gagnon had three stops for the Valiants.

Wednesday’s match marked the first time in five games this season Stevens, which is in its second year as a varsity sport, did not avenge a loss suffered to the same opponent last season. The Ducks suffered a 9-0 defeat at Manhattanville last season.

The Ducks return to action next Wednesday, traveling to Haverford, CT, for the first road contest of the season against Haverford at 4 p.m.
