Women’s Fencing Improves to 7-1 with Strong Showing at Army on Sunday

WEST POINT, N.Y. (January 22, 2006) – Senior Apryl Webb (East Orange, N.J.) posted a winning record in the sabre event against every team she faced and finished the day with an overall record of 11-2 as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s fencing team went 4-1 in competitions held on Sunday at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.  The Ducks defeated a pair of Division I schools as Stevens topped USMA (16-11) and James Madison University (23-4).  Stevens, which ran its overall record to 7-1 on the year, lost a narrow decision to Division I Farleigh Dickinson University (8-19).  Stevens also earned victories over Hunter College (23-4) and Vassar College (16-11) – both of which are D-III schools.

In epee competition, Stevens recorded a team record of 31-14.  Senior Judith Generoso (Elmhurst, N.Y.) led the way with an 11-4 mark.  Sophomore Rachel Cannell (Asbury, N.J.) went 10-4.  Sophomore Emily Freier (Manalapan, N.Y.) finished the day at 9-6.

In the foil, the Ducks won 27 of 45 matches.  Junior Rachel Cortez (Vauxhall, N.J.) posted a 9-5 record.  Junior Colleen Kirk (Churchville, Pa.) was 8-6.  Senior Helen Kourlos (Astoria, N.Y.) claimed seven victories.

Meanwhile, the Stevens sabre squad earned a combined record of 27-18.  Webb was a standout for the Ducks as she went 3-0 against Vassar and 2-0 versus both Amy and Hunter.  Webb also posted a combined record of 4-2 against FDU and JMU.  Sophomore Laura Sodon (West Milford, N.J.) went 10-5 on the day.

Stevens will be back in action on Sunday when the Ducks travel to Sweet Briar, Va., to take on host Sweet Briar College, James Madison, Virginia Tech University, Mary Baldwin College and the University of Mary Washington.
