Wrestling Finishes 1-1-1 at Southern Maine on Saturday

GORHAM, Maine (January 7, 2006) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team earned one win, a loss and a tie in three duals meets on Friday at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham, Maine.  The Ducks picked up a 29-22 victory over Bridgewater State College, tied New York University (22-22) and dropped a 24-19 decision to Southern Maine.

Sophomore Brandon MacWhinnie (Barton, N.Y.) and freshmen Mark Bistis (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Charles Favia (Brick, N.J.) all posted perfect 3-0 records on the day for Stevens, which ran its dual meet record to 4-4-1 on the year.

In the meet against Bridgewater, Stevens earned victories in six of 10 weight classes.  Senior Ian Gorham (Old Bridge, N.J.) won by forfeit at 125 pounds.  Bistis pinned freshman Alex Lazzari (Hampden, Mass.) at the 5:45 mark.  Freshman Patrick Conrad (Enola, Pa.) claimed a major decision, 14-1, over freshman Nick Antico (Sudbury, Mass.).  Favia defeated junior Tom Hennessey (Raynham, Mass.) at 149 pounds.  Sophomore Ryan Bennick (Jim Thorpe, Pa.) won by major decision, 12-4, at 157 pounds.  MacWhinnie pinned senior Mike Donovan (Tewksbury, Mass) at the 2:07 mark.

In the tie against NYU, Gorham won by forfeit.  Bistis claimed a 9-4 decision at 133 pounds.  Favia earned an 8-1 decision over sophomore Chris Darrow (Riverhead, N.Y.).  MacWhinnie pinned senior Mark Staron II (Hinckley, Ohio) at 1:57.  Junior Will Young (Willingboro, N.J.) picked up a major decision, 10-1, over freshman Alex Chianurashvili (Rehovot, Israel).

In the loss to Southern Maine, the Ducks captured four victories.  Bistis and Conrad both earned 4-2 victories in their respective weight classes.  Favia claimed an 11-4 decision over sophomore Jeff Warren (Kensington, N.H.).  MacWhinnie picked up his third pinfall of the day with a victory over freshman Andrew Dawkins (Exeter, N.H.) at 2:00.

The Ducks will be back in action on Thursday when they host Hunter College at 7 p.m.
