Women’s Tennis Suffers First Loss of Season

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 16, 2006) – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute captured five of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests en route to posting a 7-2 victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team in non-conference action on Sunday in Hoboken, N.J.  The loss was the first of the season for the Ducks as they fell to 7-1 overall.

Junior Dana Bacalla (Portland, Ore.) improved to 15-2 on the year with a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) victory over sophomore Progga Das (Orangeburg, N.Y.) at first singles.  Bacalla also teamed with senior Jin Bai (Edison, N.J.) for an 8-2 win over junior Erica Sherman (Glen Oaks, N.Y.) and Das at No. 1 doubles.  Bacalla and Bai are now 7-0 in dual matches this season.

Sophomore Rebecca Ryba (Old Brookville, N.Y.) lost a tough match at fourth singles against RPI (8-4) as sophomore Andrea Dalton (South Hadley, Mass.) pulled out a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory.  At third doubles, junior Jacqueline Carbone (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and freshman Tiffany Jow (Aberdeen, N.J.) fell to junior Charlotte Kaplan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Michelle Pelersi (Voorheesville, N.Y.), 8-4.

Stevens will be in action on Monday when it takes on Cabrini College at 3:30 p.m. in Radnor, Pa.
