HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 18, 2006) – William Paterson University pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team on Wednesday night at DeBaun Field.  The Ducks fell to 9-6 with the loss, while the Pioneers improved to 10-4 with the win.

Both teams remained scoreless in the first half with Stevens out-shooting William Paterson 5-3.

Sophomore forward Katie Cipriani (Thorofare, N.J.) put the Pioneers on the board with a goal seven minutes into the second half.

William Paterson increased its lead to 2-0 when sophomore forward Meghan Hall (Turnersville, N.J.) connected on a breakaway goal to the left side of the net.

Stevens got within one after a series of corner shots by freshman midfielder Kara Borzillo (Medford, N.J.).  After sophomore midfielder, Hillary Paul (Concord, N.H.) lined up a shot that was blocked by a defender, freshman forward Courtney Geddis (Jackson, N.J.) collected the rebound and found Borzillo set up on the left side of the goal.  Borzillo chipped a shot over senior goalkeeper Grace Browne (Hackensack, N.J.) with 12:04 remaining in the game.

Freshman forward Nicole Cook (Fallbrook, Calif.) had a chance to tie the game at 2-2, but her shot sailed wide of the net with under 10 minutes in the game.

William Paterson was able to regain control and kept Stevens from shooting during the last two minutes of the game.

Sophomore Stephanie Smith (Hockessin, Del.) and Browne each picked up three saves in goal.

Stevens out-shot William Paterson 12-8 and held a 4-2 advantage in corners in the contest.

Stevens will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson University at 1 p.m.
