MADISON, N.J. (October 18, 2006) – Coming off two straight losses, the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team got back on track with a 7-2 victory over Drew University (2-9) in non-conference action on Wednesday in Madison, N.J. With the win, the Ducks closed out the regular season with an overall record of 8-2.
In doubles action, junior Dana Bacalla (Portland, Ore.) and senior Jin Bai (Edison, N.J.) posted an 8-2 win over seniors Crystal Vo (League City, Texas) and Dragana Trivic (Kearny, N.J.) in the first flight. Sophomores Whitney Bender (Tijeras, N.M.) and Rebecca Ryba (Old Brookville, N.Y.) were victorious over junior Alex Holzman (Honolulu, Hawaii) and freshman Michelle Gbelama (Trenton, N.J.) by the score of 8-4.
Bacalla led off singles play with a tough three-set win (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) over Vo in the first position. Bender won in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) against senior Maria Carroll (Cherry Hill, N.J.) in the second flight. Rebecca defeated Trivic 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Tiffany Jow (Aberdeen, N.J.) rolled 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles against Gbelama. Junior Jacqueline Carbone (Basking Ridge, N.J.) claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory versus senior Shannon Jantz (Denver, Colo.) in the sixth flight.
As the top seed in the Skyline Conference tournament, Stevens will host a semifinal match on Wednesday, October 25. The opponent and time for that match have not been determined.
