Late Goal Propels New Paltz past Field Hockey

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (October 25, 2006) – Junior forward Jacqueline Sisco (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) netted two goals as SUNY New Paltz edged the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team on Wednesday night.  With the loss, the Ducks dropped to 10-7 overall, while the Hawks improved to 6-10 with the win.

Junior forward Beth Rychcik (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) gave Stevens the early advantage just 13:50 into the game as she tallied her third goal of the season unassisted.

Stevens dominated the first half of play and out-shot New Paltz 7-3.  The Ducks also held a 4-3 advantage in penalty corners in the half.

Junior midfielder Kaitlin Ruggiero (Carmel, N.Y.) sent a blast from outside of the circle, and Sisco touched it in to tie the score 1-1 at the opening of the second half. 

Sisco scored the game-winner with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game when senior midfielder Justine Fairclough (Glencove, N.Y.) sent a pass from just outside the circle.

Freshman midfielder Kara Borzillo (Medford, N.J.) had an attempt to tie the score with less than two minutes remaining, but senior goalie Nicole Kovac (Manlius, N.Y.) came up with the save to help New Paltz preserve the win.

The Ducks and Hawks were even in shots in the second half 6-6, while New Paltz held a 7-2 advantage in corners in the half.

Sophomore Stephanie Smith (Hockessin, Del.) gave up two goals and made no saves in the game.  Kovac totaled eight saves for the Hawks.

Stevens will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Oneonta, N.Y. to face Hartwick College in Empire 8 action at 5 p.m.
