HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (October 25, 2006) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team earned its eighth Skyline Conference victory of the season and extended its conference unbeaten streak to 41 straight games with a 1-0 victory over Centenary College on Wednesday evening. The Ducks survived what could have been one of the biggest upsets in Skyline Conference play and ran their record to 14-0-2 overall and 8-0 in the conference, while the Cyclones fell to 10-8 and 5-3 in the league with the loss. Freshman forward Todd Sheridan (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) netted the lone goal for Stevens and has now scored at least one goal in four consecutive games.
The Ducks and the Cyclones remained evenly matched throughout the contest with Stevens earning a 13-11 advantage in shots and 5-0 in corners kicks.
In the first few minutes of the game, freshman forward Terrance Johnson (Slidell, La.) had a breakaway opportunity, but Cyclone freshman goalie Damien DiBruno (Succasunna, N.J.) was able to come up with the early save. Senior midfielder Chris McGreevy (Rochester, Mich.) had a chance in the second half to put it away, but DiBruno came up with another great save over the crossbar. Johnson had a few golden opportunities to score in the second half as well, but he was unable to put the ball away. Senior defender Nick Gkionis (Jackson, N.J.) missed a header off a corner kick with about 15 minutes remaining in the game that was blasted to the right of the keeper.
Sheridan got the job done for the Ducks in the 82nd minute of the game when he received a pass from Gkionis inside the 18-yard mark. Sheridan fired a shot off his right foot to the top left corner of the net on the play.
Senior goalie Chris Celentano (Newton, N.J.) earned the shutout win for Stevens with four saves in the game. DiBruno made five saves for Centenary.
Stevens will return to action on Saturday when it hosts St. Joseph’s College in its last regular season home game of the season at 4 p.m. The game will be senior day for the Ducks.
