UNION, N.J. (October 4, 2006) – Freshman forward Terrance Johnson (Slidell, La.) tallied his team-leading ninth goal of the season, but it was not enough as the No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Kean University on Wednesday afternoon. The Ducks still remain unbeaten and stand at 9-0-2 overall, while the Cougars move to 5-2-4 with their fifth straight home overtime match.
Stevens had the best of play in the first half with a number of quality scoring opportunities. However, the Ducks were unable to get on the board until 20 minutes into the second half when senior midfielder Chris McGreevy (Rochester, Mich.) sent a through ball to Johnson, who out-ran the Cougar defense for a breakaway goal.
Following the goal, the Cougars regrouped and applied pressure on the Stevens defense and eventually junior midfielder Thomas Fink (Hamilton, N.J.) fired a shot into the box that deflected to junior forward Anthony Tuesta (Clifton, N.J.), who popped a shot into the upper corner to even the score in the 68th minute.
In overtime, Stevens out-shot Kean 5-3, but was unable to connect on a goal. The game got physical and eventually the Cougars had to play a man down for the final 16 minutes of the match.
Stevens goalkeeper senior Chris Celentano (Newton, N.J.) made three saves, while Kean junior goalie Kyle Crego (Ocean City, N.J.) made eight stops in the game.
Stevens will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Pomona, N.J. to play Richard Stockton College at 1 p.m.
