HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 1, 2006) – Senior midfielder Chris McGreevy (Rochester, Mich.), the Skyline Conference Tournament MVP, led the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team past the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 2-0, for its fourth-straight league title at the De Baun Athletic Complex on Saturday. The Ducks, who have won five of the last six Skyline crowns, advance to the NCAA Division III Championship for the fourth straight year and the fifth time in program history. In 2005, Stevens reached the Sectional Semifinals of the NCAA tourney before suffering a 3-1 loss to No. 4 Trinity University.
The Ducks, which have now won 44 straight Skyline Conference games, will learn of their 2006 NCAA First Round opponent on Monday morning.
McGreevy netted what proved to be the game-winning goal just eight minutes into the contest off a rebounded header by senior defender Nick Gkionis (Jackson, N.J.) inside the box.
Freshman midfielder Al Lockhart (Decatur, Ga.) added an insurance goal for Stevens in the 74th minute of the game. Junior midfielder Craig Moquin (Breinigsville, Pa.) sent a pass into the box off a corner opportunity. Gkionis headed the ball, which was blocked by a Merchant Marine defender. Lockhart collected the rebound and slipped the ball past senior goalie Joseph Halverson (San Antonio, Texas) to give the Ducks a 2-0 advantage.
Freshman forward Terrance Johnson (Slidell, La.) had a chance to increase the Stevens lead to 3-0, but Halverson came up with a big save in the 87th minute of the game.
Junior midfielder Ryan Wilkison (Harrisburg, Pa.), Johnson and McGreevy had close scoring opportunities in each half, but their shots sailed wide and high of the net.
The Ducks dominated their Skyline competition as they out-shot the Mariners 19-5 in the game. Stevens also held a 3-0 advantage in corners.
Senior goalie Chris Celentano (Newton, N.J.) earned his 16th win and eighth shutout of the season with two saves in the game.
