Salisbury, Md. (February 19, 2006) – Sophomore infielder John Frustaci (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with a walk as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team suffered an 8-3 loss to No. 30 Salisbury University in its season-opener on Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Field in Salisbury, Md. Salisbury improved to 3-0 on the year with the victory while Stevens fell to 0-1.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Salisbury chased Ducks’ starting pitcher Gerard Moreno (Bogota, N.J.) with a pair of singles to lead off the frame. Sophomore pitcher Scott Picerno (Bayonne, N.J.) came on in relief and induced a fielder’s choice groundball to third for the first out of the inning. With runners on first and second, junior outfielder Colin Kraus (Easton, Md.) drilled an RBI double to tie the score. Junior outfielder Andrew Jensen (Millersville, Md.) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Sea Gulls the lead. Senior first baseman Nick Pegelow (Seaford, Del.) added a run-scoring single later in the inning.
Salisbury tacked on three more runs in the fifth as Jensen came up with a clutch two-out single to fuel the rally.
Offensively for the Ducks, Moreno collected a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Freshman pitcher/outfielder Joe Gunshor (Ridgefield, Conn.) and junior infielder Andrew Tesoriero (East Brunswick, N.J.) each had a hit and scored a run as well.
The Sea Gulls were led by Kraus, who was 3-for-3 with a double, two walks, two RBI and three runs scored. Junior catcher Pete Callahan (Newark, Del.) collected a single and a double while scoring a pair of runs.
After falling behind 2-0 thanks to a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, Stevens took a 3-2 lead with a three-run outburst in the top of the third.
Gunshor led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Tesoriero. Moreno followed with a run-scoring single as Tesoriero advanced to third. Both Tesoriero and Moreno scored as senior outfielder Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J.) reached on a two-base error by second baseman Greg Lemon (Wilmington, Del.).
Moreno (0-1) was saddled with the loss as he allowed four runs, four hits and four walks over three innings. Junior pitcher/outfielder Jim Waterman (South Harrison Township, N.J.) threw three scoreless innings in relief of Picerno. Senior pitcher Eric Bush (Toms River, N.J.) picked up the win for Salisbury by tossing three scoreless innings.
Stevens will be back in action on Saturday, February 25 when the Ducks play their home-opener against Kean University at Dobbelaar Baseball Field at 1 p.m.
